The suppliers supply chain is another area of ever increasing focus. Ambient consolidation has also been attempted, with varying degrees of success by many retail suppliers in the past thus allowing SME’s suppliers to take greater control of the supply of goods being dispatched from their own distribution networks to large retail outfits this has been done in an attempt to reduce cost’s and maximise efficiency.
Historically their has been an unwillingness by suppliers to collaborate with retailers as it has long been believed that any benefits were only going to be heading one way and that was to the retailer. In order to allow this kind of collaborative project to be a resounding success it is recognised that any benefits derived need to be shared between all parties.
The ever increasing focus on reducing carbon footprints and reducing food miles is one of the most compelling reason for all sized suppliers to join in this ground breaking project with some major retailers and work towards effectively reducing their own food miles and carbon emissions. Supplier own supply chain complexity and costs should also be effected in a positive way.
